The Story of How Medicaid Ensures Families Have the Specialized Care They Need

There is hardly a more helpless feeling than seeing your brand new baby suffering and fighting for his life. Lubbock mom Rachael Traylor knows this feeling all too well. When her baby, Jayden, was born prematurely at only 27 weeks, he came into the world with multiple complex health conditions, including chronic lung disease and pulmonary hypertension. His battle has been uphill, but he was born fighting and has not stopped.

Rachael, Jayden and their family have been helped every step of the way by their Texas Medicaid health plan, First Care, and the nurses and coordinators assigned to Jayden’s care. Their care coordinators and nurses have walked the family through a challenging health care system, going above and beyond to assist with much more than just hospital stays – such as transportation services and disability benefits.
